During this past week, I worked on my Research Assessment in which I learned about the rigorous process of drawings/diagrams. Through a past meeting with my mentor, I was advised to use a Microsoft Application called Visio to create the illustrations for my client’s wearable technology. I faced numerous challenges while trying to learn the application as the software has a fee in which I may need to pay and it was very tedious. There are different ways to make the drawing and guidelines with each figure having its unique description behind it. When an inventor is going through the patent application, the invention must be described with as much detail and specificity as possible. This knowledge was very surprising to me as I assumed that broader descriptions would help the inventor more, however, I learned that filing general aspects of the inventions hurts your chances of getting approved by the United States Patent and Trademark office. I learned that instead of using concrete terms with words like “must-have,” but rather describe the invention in terms of “some versions can have this feature/function/element.” A few questions have arisen after learning this new information: How do I relate my diagrams with my descriptions in the proper format? What is the best way to incorporate my claims after the written description? I was successful because of the knowledge I acquired by the article because it will help me in my final product. I plan on continuing to research into the Visio and how to use it. I will also need to get my final product proposal reviewed by my mentor and submitted to Mrs. Brittain. I have discovered that there is a lot to learn before I start creating my final product. I need to look into patent-illustration rules, how to write an abstract, and how to conduct a prior art search.
