The first semester is officially over and there’s no stopping. I have learned an incredible amount about my profession and how the world works. ISM has allowed me to expand my knowledge in the field of Intellectual Property through research and with my mentor, Alexis Mosser. I have gone to an event with over 50 attorneys and improved my connections. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge on the litigation aspects of law, patent-eligibility guidelines, and procedures into how inventions are analyzed by patent examiners. The most essential piece that I have taken from my analysis on Alice has been how there are no boundaries through patent innovations. In simplified terms, industries are so diverse that creating a set of rules which makes sense to everyone is impossible. I had many questions about why rulings were never fully explained, but I have concluded that it’s because it wouldn’t apply to all inventions. A few of the questions that have resulted from this experience are: How are patents created between the attorney and the inventor? How does one conclude that there is a significant amount of novelty in an invention? We also had our Winter Showcase this year which was an amazing experience in which I demonstrated the knowledge I have gained through my research assessments and original work. I was very pleased with the amount of people who came up to me and asked me about my topic. I even had people come and ask me questions about a patent they applied for or obtained. I faced a few challenges in answering those questions as I only have a limited amount of knowledge thus far, however, I answered them to the best of my ability. I connected with other ISM students from other schools and had a good conversation with someone who was also studying Intellectual Property Law. The board was a challenge because it required a lot of time and planning. Luckily, my initial plan was well thought out and left me with just a few supplies needed. Overall, it was a successful event as it helped me broaden my connections and provided me with an opportunity to showcase my knowledge. I need to start developing a plan for my final product next week. I will write out a detailed proposal and review my ideas with my mentor. Furthermore, I need to schedule a meeting with my mentor to develop a monthly schedule. There are still many things that I want to learn specifically about how patents are assessed and litigation laws.
